October 1, 1947: The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) was established.
1960’s: CDF began funding international development programming, starting in the British West Indies and British Guyana.
1970’s: Credit Unions were now able to receive tax credits for their donations to CDF – enabling active credit union projects to flourish. By the end of the decade the credit union system had delegated their overseas projects to CDF to create a single, unified development program.
1980’s: The first long-term agreement was signed with the Canadian International Development agency, enabling projects to become long-term and sustainable. This allowed CDF to commit itself solely to raising money in support of CCA International.
1990’s: Funding increased and CDF was able to support an unprecedented number of projects.
2000’s: The devastating tsunami in Sri Lanka decimates ongoing CDF funded projects. Donors give in unprecedented amounts and their generosity acts as a catalyst, propelling CDF into the future with a renewed vision and dedication.
Today & Tomorrow: CDF is committed to raising $1.5 million a year – which thanks to gift matching programs is equivalent to over $15 million. The scope and reach of our projects continues to grow. To date we have empowered over one million people in over 45 countries to create and grow their own co-op or credit union.
